In April 1826, several thousand handloom weavers marched across the moorland above Rossendale, Lancashire, to destroy the power looms threatening their way of life. Six were shot dead by government forces.
Each of the Threshold works depicts an ancient hand-hewn gatepost standing on the route of the weavers’ march. Built before iron fixings, before mechanised production, the stones mark the boundary between the organic past and the world of technology that consumed it. They are threshold objects in the most literal sense - once physical boundary markers, the stones also register the point of transition to the industrial world.
They are accompanied by Void, a reverse image from the same site, which captures the natural world fading from visibility.

The Canopy series explores layers of complexity in the natural world. Images of tree canopies from various sites and times of year are captured and layered as stacked Plexiglass panels. Light and shadow shifting between panels adds further complexity, with the work ever evolving with the passing of each day and the movement of the viewer.

Each work in the Lithics series comprises a diptych pair of images. In each, the left panel shows an image of a man made stone remnant (i.e. Lithic) in the landscape, which has been analysed by machine to generate a ‘post anthropic forensic analysis’ which attempts to catalogue the object.
The right hand panel in each diptych is built from Plexiglass layers, with each layer containing archival materials, contemporary narrative or technical data related to the first image. These stacked layers suggest the complex and shifting meaning of once concrete and established objects around us, and how quickly such meaning is lost.

The Organics series was produced using a disused 1966 film camera, its condition already in decline. Light leaks and other degradations have been retained as structural elements within the images.
Where Lithics examines the failure of interpretation, Organics registers a different process: the gradual reclamation of both built structure and apparatus by the natural world.

A continuing series documenting different aspects of Rossendale in Lancashire. The title is taken from the borough’s motto, granted in 1975 and stressing the importance of working hard for the success of the area.
Most elements of the coat of arms are still of contemporary relevance, although wolves are rarely seen.
